Oak Grove's Story
starts with a passion for advancing the kingdom by making disciples.
Oak Grove Baptist Church was formed in 1874 during a time of lawlessness and economic depression in Texas. A group of early settlers gathered together to pray about planting a church along the Brazos to serve the areas of Wortham, Coon Creek, China Spring, and Greenock. Oak Grove was founded and by the end of 1875 the church had 37 total members.
The DNA of Oak Grove for nearly 150 years has been one of evangelistic fervor and a heart for missions. By 1876 the members recognized the power of personal evangelism. They began studying the evangelistic methods of D.L. Moody and served and reached their surrounding areas with the gospel.
In the early years services were lit by candlelight and kerosene lamps, and though much has changed in 150 years, the Lord has been faithful and we are proud to continue the work today of advancing the kingdom by making disciples where we live, work, and play.
